_______________

~ Base coverage on hits to the outfield ~

Situation

What to do

No one on, ball hit to:

Left SS makes a quick decision to either lineup for a cutoff to 2nd, or covers the bag.  If you do take a cutoff, be ready to fire it to 2nd if the runner thinks he's fast enough to make it.
Left-Center SS moves out to cutoff the throw.  When you're in position or on your way, check the runner and be ready to throw it to 2nd or 3rd.  Your teammates will help by calling to you, but it helps to know yourself.
Right SS backs up a throw to 2nd.  If 2nd goes out for a cutoff, you must cover the bag.  If she runs passed you, remember to move to the inside of the bag in a cutoff stance.
Right-Center SS covers 2nd.  Be in position to tag the runner, but get out of her way if there is no play at your bag.  Watch for her to tag the base if possible.  You might be an alternate cutoff to 3rd, and stay ready for a rundown.
Short-Center SS covers 2nd.  Be ready to put on the tag with your glove swept from in front of the bag.  On a casual throw you may have a play at the runner going back to 1st.  Remember that you are likely not in the best position to deliver your best strike, and keep the particular game situation (inning, score, etc.) in mind before making any desperate play.

Runner on 1st, ball hit to:

Left line SS runs out behind 3rd. Run out as far as you need to.  You can see where the LF is going.  Pick you cutoff spot accordingly.  Don't watch the runner; it won't slow her down.  If you get the cutoff, be in a good position to turn and fire it to where you are told.
Left SS is the cutoff.  Know the speed of the players, and be ready to cut to 2nd or 3rd.  Often a batter will stroll into 2nd figuring we will be too worried about the lead runner.  Be sure your RF is in a position to backup a snap throw to 2nd.  It would be a shame if a run scores on this hit.  Don't let the shame be yours.
Left-Center SS runs out for cutoff.  Call your 2nd to come out with you if you see the play develop where you'll need his help.  Set up for a relay cutoff and turn quickly to fire the ball.  Listen for your team, but expect to throw the ball home.  Actually you'll be throwing through 1st who is your cutoff.
Right-Center SS covers 2nd.  If your 2nd is not running out to cutoff the throw, back him up or call him to back you up.  Take charge based on your positions, not just because you want the ball.  Judge the distance of the hit and determine your action.  If you get the throw from the outfield, know if you still have a play at the plate.
Short-Center SS goes for the ball.  If the ball is out of your range, cover the bag and direct your 2nd to back you up.  If the ball is deep enough, line up for a cutoff to 3rd.  Judge the hit quickly and react accordingly.

Lead runner on 2nd:

Left SS is cutoff to 3rd.
Center SS is the cutoff.  Judge the hit to determine the best spot to line up for a cutoff.  Know the situation~ the score, the outs, the inning~ and act accordingly.
Right-Center SS covers 2nd.  Remember your alternate cutoff assignments.  Have a feel for how the play is developing, and revise your assistance accordingly.  (Playing SS requires superior intelligence so the phraseology here shouldn't trouble you.)
Right SS covers 2nd.  Remember your alternate cutoff assignments.  Have a feel for how the play is developing, and revise your assistance accordingly.

Lead runner on 3rd:

We would ignore the lead runner unless there is a play at the plate, so consider the assignments based on where the second runner is.
