_______________

~ Base coverage on hits to the outfield ~

Situation

What to do

No one on, ball hit to:

Left Pitcher helps to make sure the runner doesn't get to 2nd.  His job may include backing up an errant throw, or cutting off an over-zealous runner.  It's unlikely the pitcher would be involved in a rundown.  If the ball is hit deep, he should move instead to back up 3rd.
Left-Center Pitcher decides to either back up the cutoff by positioning himself at the SS vacancy, or moves to backup 3rd.
Right Pitcher lines up for a cutoff to 3rd.  If the ball is hit deep and 2nd goes out to cut off, you should move to backup 3rd since LF could backup SS and backing up the plate would be useless.
Right-Center Pitcher moves out to backup 2nd and be the cutoff to 3rd.  You need to stay alert, and may be a beacon for your team.  Remember to gesture as well as yell where to throw the ball.
Short-Center Pitcher moves off the mound to backup 2nd.

Runner on 1st, ball hit to:

Left line Pitcher moves in to backup the plate.  You might have a good view to help your teammates with where to make throws, but yield to your catcher's loud voice.  When you have the ball after a play at the plate remember it is a live ball and keep you attention on the remaining runner.
Left Pitcher backs up 3rd.  You may also be a cutoff to the plate.  Listen to your catcher's instruction, and think for yourself.
Left-Center Pitcher decides to backup 3rd or home.  Home would be your most likely choice on a ball hit to deep left-center.
Right-Center Pitcher backs up 3rd.
Short-Center Pitcher backs up 3rd.

Lead runner on 2nd:

Left Pitcher backs up home.  Remember to always angle yourself where an errant throw is most likely to find you.
Center Pitcher backs up home.  Remember to always angle yourself where an errant throw is most likely to find you.
Right-Center Pitcher backs up the plate.
Right Pitcher backs up the plate.

Lead runner on 3rd:

We would ignore the lead runner unless there is a play at the plate, so consider the assignments based on where the second runner is.
