_______________

~ Base coverage on hits to the outfield ~

Situation

What to do

No one on, ball hit to:

Left LF should always be ready to move.  Snap up the ball and throw it to your cutoff as quickly as possible, always remembering to throw it to his glove side.  If the ball is not hit too deeply, you may throw it right to the bag.  But be careful, and know your ability and the speed of the runner.
Left-Center LF runs quickly to the ball.  Communicate with the center fielder.  Either get the ball and quickly throw it to the cutoff, or back up the center fielder.  If you become the backup here, try to see or hear where the throw should be made, and tell the CF.
Right LF comes in to back up an errant throw to 2nd.  You need to be ready to help everyone know where to throw it.
Right-Center LF backs up the throw in.  With the SS going to the bag you might see yourself as another cutoff to 3rd while you prepare to backup 2nd. Or, if a throw to 3rd looks likely, let your pitcher move out, and you backup 3rd.  Communicate.
Short-Center LF moves to the ball.  This should be a routine single, but get the throw in quickly for the possibility of catching her off guard and getting the out.

Runner on 1st, ball hit to:

Left line LFhustles to the ball.  A hit like this is the reason you kept your legs moving between pitches.  Pump them stumps and get to the ball quickly.  Don't overrun the ball, and angle yourself before you put on the brakes.  Be sure you're set to make a strong throw.  Your SS is available especially if you are not in a good set position to make a strong throw.  Your CF may be your closes voice.
Left LF should always be ready to move.  Snap up the ball and throw it in as quickly as possible.  If the ball is not hit too deeply, you may throw it right to the bag.  But be careful, and know your ability and the speed of the runner.  Throw ahead of the lead runner.  If it's over your head, rush to, be conscious of your turn and listen to your teammates as to where to throw it.  It it's that deep, plan on going home with it.

Lead runner on 2nd:

Left LF should always be ready to move.  Snap up the ball and throw it in as quickly as possible.  If the ball is not hit too deeply, you might have a play at 3rd, especially if it was a pop up.  But be careful, and know your ability and the speed of the runner.  Throw ahead of the lead runner.  If it's over your head, rush to it, be conscious of your turn and be ready to throw it hard to your cutoff.

Right-Center LF backs up 3rd.
Right LF backs up 3rd.  If it looks like a throw is more likely to come to 2nd, move to backup the SS.

Lead runner on 3rd:

We would ignore the lead runner unless there is a play at the plate, so consider the assignments based on where the second runner is.
