~ Base coverage on hits to the
outfield ~
|
Situation |
What
to do |
|
No one on, ball hit to: |
 | Left Catcher
prepares
for an overthrow to 1st, and can get involved in a rundown, backing up
the 1st base position. If the ball is hit deep enough to left,
the catcher |
 | Left-Center
Catcher
moves to follow the
runner to 1st if it looks like it will be a close play at second.
If the runner moves past 2nd, you must get back to the plate quickly.
If you know it's going to be at least a double, you should move
out to protect the plate. |
 | Right Catcher
runs down the 1st base line
to backup an errant throw. If it's a hot day, you might not want
to waste your energy running to 1st. Hopefully you won't be
needed on this play, but you should always be watching for an
opportunity to help your team. Maybe you'll be needed to backup,
maybe to tell a player where to throw the ball. Be loud.
Your team needs to hear you above the fans. |
 | Right-Center
Catcher
stays put on this one.
Be prepared to act as the play develops. For example, if a quick
throw to 2nd might result in a rundown between 1st and 2nd, move to
help. Step in front of the plate to command your infield. |
 | Short-Center
Catcher
moves down the 1st
base line with the runner. Make sure she touches 1st, know how
to make the appeal, and read the bold print above. |
|
|
Runner on 1st, ball hit to: |
 | Left line Catcher
moves out to protect the
plate (after giving the batter an evil eye). This one definitely
smells like trouble for your team, but with good communication a run
can be prevented and an out can be made. Remember you are the
commander of your infield. Yell "Cut 2!" or "Cut
3!" if you see that's what should be done. |
 | Left Catcher
steps out to command his
infield. You need to be alert to the speed of the runner and the
ability of each of your players. You may want to have your
pitcher get in line for a throw to the plate. Be ready to yell
loudly. Protect the plate. Don't call for the ball if you
don't really have a play. |
 | Left-Center Catcher
steps up to the plate.
Make sure your players are in place. Be ready to take the throw,
making the tag with your throwing hand tightly holding the ball in the
pocket. |
 | Right-Center Catcher
steps up to command his
infield. |
 | Short-Center Catcher
steps up to command
his infield. |
|
|
Lead runner on 2nd: |
 | Left Catcher
steps up to protect the plate.
Watch for the runner to slide away from you. Don't be lured into
following her. She has to come to the plate to score. Hold
the ball in you glove. Remember no matter how strong you are it
is easier for her to knock the ball out of your mit than any
other glove on the field. |
 | Center Catcher
steps up to protect the plate.
If the throw pulls you away, be quick to come back to the plate with
the ball held firmly in both hands. Make the tag, and hustle to
catch another runner. |
 | Right-Center Catcher
steps up to command
his infield and protect his team's home plate. |
 | Right Catcher
steps up to command
his infield and protect his team's home plate. |
|
|
Lead runner on 3rd: |
We
would ignore the lead runner unless there is a play at the plate, so
consider the assignments based on where the second runner is. |
