_______________

Whenever there is a runner on second we need to think of preventing the run.  Team communication is the most important link to getting outs and minimizing runs when the ball is hit to the outfield.  Team communication starts before each pitch.  You need to know what to do before you know you need to do it.

By Position:
Pitcher backs up the plate.
Catcher steps up to command his infield and protect his team's home.
First Base lines up for cutoff to the plate.  If the hit is shallow and there is little or no threat of the lead runner attempting to score, stay near your bag.
Second Base is the cutoff.  Be ready to throw the ball hard to any base including home.  Listen to your team.
Third Base covers the bag.  Know how to play 3rd.  Learn all you can about all the possibilities.  Be prepared to act quickly.
Short Stop covers second.  Remember your alternate cutoff assignments.  Have a feel for how the play is developing, and revise your assistance accordingly.
Left Field backs up 3rd.  If it looks like a throw is more likely to come to second, move to backup the SS.
Center Field should scramble over to help RF, even if it looks like an easy play.  You never know when he might slip, miss the ball, or have it ricochet off of his glove.  Don't be caught watching your teammate's embarrassment when you could have helped undo it.
Right Field should always be ready to move.  Snap up the ball and throw it in as quickly as possible.  If you are moving in on the ball, try for a play at third.  You should have the strongest arm in the OF.  Otherwise, get the ball in quickly to second.  If the ball is hit deep, you have to think of getting the out at the plate.  Your 1st will be lined up for a relay.  Two throws fast and low are better than one long and high.

The Team communicates.
