_______________

Whenever there is a runner on second we need to think of preventing the run.  Team communication is the most important link to getting outs and minimizing runs when the ball is hit to the outfield.  Team communication starts before each pitch.  You need to know what to do before you know you need to do it.

By Position:
Pitcher backs up home.  Remember to always angle yourself where an errant throw is most likely to find you.
Catcher steps up to protect the plate.  If the throw pulls you away, be quick to come back to the plate with the ball held firmly in both hands.  Make the tag, and hustle to catch another runner.
First Base lines up for cutoff home.
Second Base covers the bag.  You always have to think slightly different if there is a runner on 1st too.  Hopefully the worse this turns out is with runners on 1st and 3rd.  You're likely to get the ball, so know what to do with it.  At times you'll need to turn and fire the ball home; other times to 1st or to 3rd.  Still other times it might be best to hold it.  Be smart.  Read the speed of the runners to anticipate your target.  Whereas it's always appropriate to prevent a run, avoid throwing the ball around allowing another runner to advance to a scoring position.
Third Base covers the bag.
Short Stop is the cutoff.  Judge the hit to determine the best spot to line up for a cutoff.  Know the situation~ the score, the outs, the inning~ and act accordingly.
Left Field rushes to the ball.  If you know you will not be of any help going after the ball, either line up as an alternate cutoff or rush to back up 3rd.
Center Field may have to demonstrate his superior speed and strength.  Snap up the ball quickly and be ready to throw it hard.  Unless the ball is too deep, you'll probably throw it directly to second or through 1st to home.  Remember to scoop a roller off your glove hand foot so you can throw it on stride.
Right Field rushes to the ball.  If you know you can't make it to the ball, still rush to help your CF any way you can.  If the situation suggests you would be better somewhere else, hustle to get there.

The Team communicates.
