_______________

Please read every page from the Base Coverage list.  Many times the instruction for a certain position is the same on several pages, but often there are important differences.  Also, many ideas you get from one page will help you in another coverage situation.  The more you know, the more prepared you are.

By Position:
Pitcher backs up 3rd.
Catcher steps up to command his infield.
First Base lines up for a cutoff to home.
Second Base is the cutoff.  If the ball is not hit too deep in the gap, you may go to the bag.  If your SS is already there, back him up.
Third Base covers the bag.
Short Stop covers second.  If your 2nd is not running out to cutoff the throw, back him up or call him to back you up.  Take charge based on your positions, not just because you want the ball.  Judge the distance of the hit and determine your action.  If you get the throw from the outfield, know if you still have a play at the plate.
Left Field backs up 3rd.
Center Field runs to the ball.  Don't watch the runner.  Watch the ball, and angle your way to it.  Your team will tell you where to throw it.  If your RF is in a better line to get the ball, make sure you are in your best position to back him up before you peak at the play to get ready to tell him where to throw it.
Right Field runs to the ball.  Don't watch the runner.  Watch the ball, and angle your way to it.  Your team will tell you where to throw it.  If your CF is in a better line to get the ball, make sure you are in your best position to back him up before you peak at the play to get ready to tell him where to throw it.

The Team communicates.
