_______________

This is trouble, but still we try to prevent a run.  If we have no play on the lead runner, our second objective is to get the batter out, or at least keep her to a double.  Remember to throw ahead of the lead runner.  Listen to your teammates.

By Position:
Pitcher decides to backup third or home.  Home would be your most likely choice on a ball hit to deep left-center.
Catcher steps up to the plate.  Make sure your players are in place.  Be ready to take the throw, making the tag with your throwing hand tightly holding the ball in the pocket.
First Base lines up for a cutoff home.
Second Base covers the bag.  If the ball is hit deep and your SS lines up for third or home, you can run out to line up for a relay to second.  Make sure your 1st knows to cover your second base assignment.
Third Base covers the bag.  Stay alert to how the play develops.  Know whether you should take a throw, direct it home or to a cutoff to second.  Know what's going on, and communicate your knowledge to your team.
Short Stop runs out for cutoff.  Call your 2nd to come out with you if you see the play develop where you'll need his help.  Set up for a relay cutoff and turn quickly to fire the ball.  Listen for your team, but expect to throw the ball home.  Actually you'll be throwing through 1st who is your cutoff.
Left Field runs quickly to the ball.  Communicate with the CFEither get the ball and quickly throw it to the cutoff, or back up your CF.  If you become the backup here, try to see or hear where the throw should be made, and tell your CF.
Center Field runs quickly to the ball.  Communicate with the LFEither get the ball and quickly throw it to the cutoff, or back up your LF.  If you become the backup here, try to see or hear where the throw should be made, and tell your LF.
Right Field moves in to backup a throw to second.  The throw could come from either the outfield or back from 3rd.  Be ready for either.  Watch the play.  You are an important link in communication.  You often have the best view of the runner in relation to the ball.  Yell this information to your teammates.  It would be a shame to keep it a secret.

The Team communicates.
