_______________

Again we try to prevent a run.  If we have no play on the lead runner, our second objective is to get the batter out, or at least keep her to a double.  Remember to throw ahead of the lead runner.  Listen to your teammates.

By Position:
Pitcher backs up 3rd.  You may also be a cutoff to the plate.  Listen to your catcher's instruction, and think for yourself.
Catcher steps out to command his infield.  You need to be alert to the speed of the runner and the ability of each of your players.  You may want to have your pitcher get in line for a throw to the plate.  Be ready to yell loudly.  Protect the plate.  Don't call for the ball if you don't really have a play.
First Base stays to the bag.  Since this should end up with runners on first and second, you might just watch this one.  On the other hand, be ready for all of the things that can go wrong.
Second Base covers the bag.  If the lead runner is particularly slow, there might be a play.  Be ready for the quick throw if she overruns the base.
Third Base covers the bag.  It should end up with runners on first and second, but be ready.  Even on a routine throw to second something could go wrong.  It's good to have confidence in your team's ability, but don't be caught with your pride in the air.  Sometimes the biggest mistake is not made by the player making the error, but by the teammate who fails to cover it up.
Short Stop is the cutoff.  Know the speed of the players, and be ready to cut to second or third.  Often a batter will stroll into 2nd figuring we will be too worried about the lead runner.  Be sure your RF is in a position to backup a snap throw to second.  It would be a shame if a run scores on this hit.  Don't let the shame be yours.
Left Field should always be ready to move.  Snap up the ball and throw it in quickly.
Center Field should scramble over to help the LF, even if it looks like an easy play.  You never know when he might slip, miss the ball, or have it ricochet off of his glove.  Don't be caught watching your teammate's embarrassment when you could have helped undo it.
Right Field comes in to back up an errant throw to second and be ready to help everyone know where to throw it.

The Team communicates.
