_______________

Here we show the catcher moving to cover an overthrow to 1st.  It's not likely that a throw will be made there, but a rundown is possible if the runner is not aware of our outfield's ability to make fine plays at second.  So our catcher should be there for that.  It's also a good idea for the catcher to follow the runner to first whenever there are no runners on and the ball is hit anywhere but the outfield gaps.  He would certainly beat the runner back home if the worst were to happen.

By Position:
Pitcher lines up for a cutoff to third.  If the ball is hit deep and 2nd goes out to cut off, you should move to backup 3rd since your LF could backup SS and backing up the plate would be useless.
Catcher runs down the first base line to backup an errant throw.  If it's a hot day, you might not want to waste your energy running to first.  Hopefully you won't be needed on this play, but you should always be watching for an opportunity to help your team.  Maybe you'll be needed to backup, maybe to tell a player where to throw the ball.  Be loud.  Your team needs to hear you above the fans.
First Base covers the bag.  Make sure not to interfere with the runner, and watch her touch the bag.  If she moves passed second, you line up for a possible throw home, although inside the park homeruns are rare.
Second Base covers the bag.  If the ball is hit deep, you need to run out to cut it off.  Be ready in your cutoff stance, and know where you are going to throw the ball.  You team will be telling you.
Third Base covers the bag.  Hopefully you won't be needed, but be ready.  If it's coming to you, it's trouble.  Be ready to stop it with a good sweeping tag with your glove on the ground in front of the bag.
Short Stop backs up a throw to second.  If 2nd goes out for a cutoff, you must cover the bag.  If she runs passed you, remember to move to the inside of the bag in a cutoff stance.
Left Field comes in to back up an errant throw to 2nd.  You need to be ready to help everyone know where to throw it.
Center Field should scramble over to help the RF.
Right Field should always be ready to move.  Snap up the ball and throw it to your cutoff as quickly as possible, always remembering to throw it to his glove side.  If the ball is not hit too deep, you may throw it right to second.  Remember to always throw ahead of the runner.  In this case you may have your pitcher in line for a throw to 3rd, but a throw to 2nd might be your best cutoff.

The Team communicates.
