_______________

~ Base coverage on hits to the outfield ~

Situation

What to do

No one on, ball hit to:

Left 3rd covers 3rd in the unlikely event the runner makes a move for third.
Left-Center 3rd tags the runner out coming to 3rd.  Remember to get your glove on the ground in front of the bag and the sliding runner.  If you get the throw and the runner retreats, be very selective on throwing to 2nd.  Remember the infield's primary responsibility is to keep the runner at 2nd.
Right 3rd covers the bag.  Hopefully you won't be needed, but be ready.  If it's coming to you, it's trouble.  Be ready to stop it with a good sweeping tag with your glove on the ground in front of the bag.
Right-Center 3rd covers the bag.  Hopefully you won't be needed, but be ready.  If it's coming to you, it's trouble.  Be ready to stop it with a good sweeping tag with your glove on the ground in front of the bag.
Short-Center 3rd moves out for an errant throw to 2nd.  Yield to your pitcher here because if there is an errant throw to 2nd, she'll probably be moving to your bag.  You would only get the throw if you are in a good position to tag the runner.  Don't let her get to 3rd on a single.

Runner on 1st, ball hit to:

Left line 3rdcovers the bag.  In the best case scenario the ball is thrown to 2nd, but it's likely you'll be involved in this play.  Be ready for anything.  Analyze the flight of the ball and determine your reaction.  Listen to your teammates for a cutoff call, and think for yourself.
Left 3rd covers the bag.  It should end up with runners on 2nd and 3rd, but be ready.  Even on a routine throw to 2nd something could go wrong.  It's good to have confidence in your team's ability, but don't be caught with your pride in the air.  Sometimes the biggest mistake is not made by the player making the error, but by the teammate who fails to cover it up.
Left-Center 3rd covers the bag.  Stay alert to how the play develops.  Know whether you should take a throw, direct it home or to a cutoff to 2nd.  Know what's going on, and communicate your knowledge to your team.
Right-Center 3rd covers the bag
Short-Center 3rdcovers the bag.

Lead runner on 2nd:

Left 3rd covers the bag.
Center 3rd covers the bag.
Right-Center 3rd covers the bag.  Know how to play 3rd.  Learn all you can about all the possibilities.  Be prepared to act quickly.
Right 3rd covers the bag.  Know how to play 3rd.  Learn all you can about all the possibilities.  Be prepared to act quickly.

Lead runner on 3rd:

We would ignore the lead runner unless there is a play at the plate, so consider the assignments based on where the second runner is.
