_______________

~ Base coverage on hits to the outfield ~

Situation

What to do

No one on, ball hit to:

Left 2nd covers the bag only if the SS goes out for a cutoff
Left-Center 2nd covers the bag to keep the runner from advancing.  You may need to move out to relay a quick cutoff home depending on where the ball is hit and how fast the runner is, but generally you stay at the bag.  Hopefully there will be a play.  Remember to sweep the tag.
Right 2nd covers the bag.  If the ball is hit deep, you need to run out to cut it off.  Be ready in your cutoff stance, and know where you are going to throw the ball.  You team will be telling you.
Right-Center 2nd is the cutoff to 2nd.  Run as deep as you need to get.  If your outfielders are running hard, you know you should be too.  Keep an eye and and ear on the play to help the OF know where to throw it.
Short-Center 2nd backs up the throw to 2nd.  If your SS misjudges the depth of the hit, you move to cover his butt by covering the bag.

Runner on 1st, ball hit to:

Left line 2ndruns to be a cutoff to home.  You may be the backup to 3rd and a cutoff to the plate, so line up for both.  If you see or hear the lead runner will score, cutoff the throw and be ready to fire a strike to get the batter out.  If you can see she will be save a 2nd, don't throw it.
Left 2nd covers the bag.  If the lead runner is particularly slow, there might be a play.  Be ready for the quick throw if she overruns the base.
Left-Center 2nd covers the bag.  If the ball is hit deep and your SS lines up for third or home, you can run out to line up for a relay to second.  Make sure your 1st knows to cover your second base assignment.
Right-Center 2nd is the cutoff.  If the ball is not hit too deep in the gap, you may go to the bag.  If your SS is already there, back him up.
Short-Center 2nd covers the bag.  If your SS goes to the bag, back him up.

Lead runner on 2nd:

Left 2nd covers the bag.
Center 2nd covers the bag.  You always have to think slightly different if there is a runner on 1st too.  Hopefully the worse this turns out is with runners on 1st and 3rd.  You're likely to get the ball, so know what to do with it.  At times you'll need to turn and fire the ball home; other times to 1st or to 3rd.  Still other times it might be best to hold it.  Be smart.  Read the speed of the runners to anticipate your target.  Whereas it's always appropriate to prevent a run, avoid throwing the ball around allowing another runner to advance to a scoring position.
Right-Center 2nd is the cutoff to the left side.
Right 2nd is the cutoff.  Be ready to throw the ball hard to any base including home.  Listen to your team.

Lead runner on 3rd:

We would ignore the lead runner unless there is a play at the plate, so consider the assignments based on where the second runner is.
