~ Base coverage on hits to the
outfield ~
|
Situation |
What
to do |
|
No one on, ball hit to: |
 | Left 1st
plays the bag, making
sure not to interfere with the runner. With the catcher covering
the bag 1st can move in behind a runner for a sneaky out,
but that play should only be used in desperate situations, and even
then only against a foolish runner. Remember to never be that
foolish runner yourself. |
 | Left-Center
1st
stays near enough to
the base if a slow runner might be forced back. If you see a
play at 3rd or the plate is likely, position yourself to backup a
throw or take a second cutoff. Remember the cutoff stance. |
 | Right 1st
covers the bag. Make
sure not to interfere with the runner, and watch her touch the bag.
If she moves passed 2nd, you line up for a possible throw home,
although inside the park homeruns are rare. |
 | Right-Center
1st
lines up for throw home.
Watch the runner tag the base, and know how to make the appeal.
Although you're lined up for a relay throw to the plate, you might be
needed to back up an errant throw to 2nd. Remember, with no one
on you won't be cutting off the throw to the plate. If
anything, you'll be a relay to the plate. So be ready to fire
the relay for a strike, but listen for your team to tell you to let
the throw go by to your catcher. |
 | Short-Center
1st
covers the bag. Make
sure not to interfere with the runner, and watch her touch the bag.
If she makes too much of a turn, be ready for the throw and put on the
tag. Block the base with your glove on a slide, and sweep the
tag. |

|
Runner on 1st, ball hit to: |
 | Left line 1stfollows the batter to 2nd.
This can get tricky. You can't interfere with either runner.
If you see that the lead runner will probably be safe at 3rd or may
make it home, you might want to run in front of the batter to
take a quick throw for an out at 2nd. |
 | Left 1st
stays to the bag. Since this
should end up with runners on 1st and 2nd, you might just watch this
one. On the other hand, be ready for all of the things that can
go wrong. |
 | Left-Center 1stlines up for a cutoff home.
Also notice the alternative listed in the drawing above. If you
see 2nd moving out, whether or not he remembers to communicate that to
you, you should cover 2nd ahead of the batter and behind the lead
runner. Otherwise, get in position to relay home, cut to 2nd or
3rd, or hold the ball. You should know the best way to set up
for any of the various things you may be called on to do, and change
according to the development of the play. |

Lead runner on 2nd: |
 | Left 1st
lines up for cutoff home. |
 | Center 1st
lines up for a cutoff home. |
 | Right-Center 1st
lines up for a cutoff
home. Be ready to fire the ball back to 3rd if the lead runner over
turns after your OF does it's job. If the runner is going to
reach the plate, your SS should communicate that to you. In that
case, be ready to surprise the new lead runner. But only throw
the ball if you actually have a play and you know your teammate is
ready to receive such a daring attempt. Be ready to move back to
your bag if the play is shortened by your fine defense. |
 | Right 1st
lines up for cutoff
to the home. If the hit is shallow and there is little or no
threat of the lead runner attempting to score, stay near your bag. |
|
|
Lead runner on 3rd: |
We
would ignore the lead runner unless there is a play at the plate, so
consider the assignments based on where the second runner is. |
